When Marissa and Matthew Bishop contact Avery Chambers for counselling, she senses immediately that they are hiding something but believes that the couple is perfect for her ten-step-therapy programme. First, it all goes according to plan. Marissa confesses her affair with somebody from her gym and Matthew reacts as one would suppose. But then, the picture blurs and Marissa’s employee Polly appears on the scene, as well as Matthew’s ex, and the couple is more and more under stress. Avery gets stressed, too, since she has her own battles to fight while caring for her clients. When Avery’s private life suddenly mixes with the Bishop’s, it becomes obvious that there are a lot more secrets than you would ever have expected.

I have already enjoyed “The Wife between Us” and “You Are Not Alone” by the writing duo Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen and quite naturally was curious to see what their latest mystery “The Golden Couple” would come up with. I was not disappointed, a complex story which only slowly unfolds it whole potential and develops into a web of lies and secrets not easy to untangle.

The protagonist Avery is an interesting character. Admittedly, I’d say her professional approach might be questionable, but she is really concerned about the people she works with and puts a lot of effort in the counselling. Why she herself is always close to freaking out and on high alert only becomes obvious after some time, adding another aspect to her personality.

The couple at first seems to be rather average but then develops into a fascinating pair which oscillates between fighting together and fighting each other. The other characters at some point become highly suspect in the way they act, what they obviously hide and the links they have which are not apparent at first.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the novel and I am eager to any further read of the duo.

When one morning Shay Miller observes a woman committing suicide in the New York underground, her life, too, crumbles and falls. The shock sits so deep that she in not able to enter any underground station anymore. She starts to investigate about the woman and soon finds out her name, Amanda, and thus comes across some of her friends: Cassandra and Jane Moore, two sisters her own age who are everything Shay is not: They have a successful PR agency, know how to dress and obviously know the right places and the right people in town. Just as Shay is fascinated by them, they seem to feel pity for her and help her to find a new place to stay when she needs to move out, they help her to get a new style and also can connect her to finally find a better job. All seems to be perfect in Shay’s new life, yet some things are completely wrong and it does not take too long for her to realise that all that glitters isn’t gold, but fake and also highly dangerous.

I was already fascinated by “The Wife Between Us” which convinced me due to the very clever construction of the story. In “You Are Not Alone”, we also get the story narrated from different points of view and also different points in time which cleverly supports suspense since you already get facts which do not make too much sense until you learn the story behind them. As you are always a bit ahead of Shay, you sympathise with her and, of course, you hope that in the end, all will turn out well even though you cannot be too sure of that.

The whole plot lives on the characters. Shay as well as Cassandra and Jane are interestingly drawn and totally contrasting which makes them equally appealing for the reader. Just a simply – yet, quite important aspect – that I totally adored was Shay’s obsession with numbers and statistics. The authors have perfectly integrated this fact into the story.

Apart from the entertaining factor, in my opinion, the novel also provides insight in the psychological mechanisms that operate within people who are a bit unsecure and rather sad since their life did not turn out the way they hoped. Shay is very clever and likeable, nevertheless, in all areas of her life she more or less failed: neither does she have a flat of her own, nor a permanent job or relationship. No wonder that she immediately falls for the shiny and glamorous Moore sisters who represent everything she also wishes for. This makes it quite easy for them to manipulate her – just as they managed to take advantage of others who were in critical situations, too.

A captivating suspense novel that I did not want to put down once I had started.

Vanessa ist ein psychisches Wrack. Nach der Scheidung von Richard kommt sie nicht mehr auf die Füße. Aber sie muss die junge Frau warnen, die geradewegs ins Verderbern rennt und ebabsichtigt, ihre Nachfolge anzutreten. Sie kennt Richard nicht so, wie sie ihn kennt. Auch zu ihr war er charmant und nett. Anfangs. Doch dann hat er sich in einen Kontrollfreak verwandelt, der keinen ihrer Schritte unbeobachtet ließ. Und nun hat er wieder eine junge Frau gefunden, die er bezaubern kann und die für ihn die perfekte Ehefrau spielen soll. Nellie fühl sich beobachtet, irgendetwas ist seltsam, auch die Anrufe, bei denen offenbar jemand am anderen Ende der Leitung ist, jedoch nie ein Wort sagt, beunruhigen sie zunehmend. Langsam wird ihr ihr eigenes Leben unheimlich. Und noch eine dritte Frau beobachtet die Szenerie, doch was ist ihr geheimer Plan?

Sarah Pekkanen arbeitet bereits seit Jahren als Autorin und hat zahlreiche Bücher veröffentlicht, Greer Hendricks war mehrere Jahre Lektorin bei Simon & Schuster und ist ausgebildete Journalistin. Für „The Wife Between Us“ arbeiteten die beiden Frauen erstmals zusammen und herausgekommen ist ein clever konstruierter Krimi, der immer wieder überraschen kann.

Der Roman beginnt ohne viel Vorgeplänkel, unmittelbar ist man in der Geschichte, die alternierend die Vanessas Erlebnisse nach der Trennung von Richard und Nellies Vorbereitungen auf die Hochzeit mit ebendiesem erzählt. In welchem Verhältnis die beiden Frauen stehen, glaubt man recht schnell zu wissen, einzig der Moment des Zusammentreffens und der Offenbarung von Vanessas Leid stehen noch aus. Doch dann zeigt sich, dass der Roman deutlich geschickter aufgebaut ist, als es zunächst den Anschein macht und die leichte Verschiebung der Erzählung lässt einen neuen Blickwinkel zu.

Durch die raffinierte Erzählkonstruktion wird ein bizarres und gefährliches Abhängigkeitsverhältnis geschildert, in dessen Zentrum ein charmanter Mann steht, der durch geschickte Manipulation die Kontrolle über seine junge Frau gewinnt und nicht nur ihren Alltag überprüfen und lenken kann, sondern der sie auch psychisch unbemerkt nach und nach in eine Abhängigkeit bringt, aus der sie allein so einfach nicht mehr ausbrechen kann.

Dies ist kein ganz neues Thema, bisweilen auch etwas durchschaubar und leicht vorherzusehen. Es ist tatsächlich die Anlage der Erzählung, die die Schwächen hier locker ausgleicht und so zu dem überzeugenden Ergebnis führt. Dass es am Ende noch eine weitere Überraschung gibt, war allerdings nicht abzusehen, wäre für mich auch nicht mehr erforderlich gewesen.

Insgesamt ein runder Roman, der eine neue Variante einer bekannten Geschichte erzählt. Den beiden Autorinnen ist hier ein kleines Kunststück gelungen, indem sie einen völlig unerwarteten Aufbau geschaffen haben, der sich erst langsam entfaltet und dadurch überzeugen kann.
